(Laura, this is the eggnog recipe I got when I was in college and have been using it even since.  The second recipe is from Southern Living.  A lot of people like the recipe with the whipping cream in it.

Eggnog  (Southern Living)

6 eggs, separated

¾ cup sugar

½ tsp vanilla

¼ tsp nutmeg

3 cups whipping cream

2 cups milk

¼ cup sugar

Ground nutmeg

Beat egg yolks until thick and lemon colored; gradually add ¾ cup sugar, vanilla, and ¼ tsp nutmeg, beating well at medium speed of an electric mixer.   Cover and chill 8 hours.

Place chilled mixture in a punch bowl; gradually stir in cream and milk.  Beat egg whites (at room temperature) in a large mixing bowl until soft peaks form.  Gradually add ¼ cup sugar, and beat until stiff.  Fold whites into chilled mixture.  Sprinkle with nutmeg.  Yield:  about 3 quarts.
